I thought you would only be able to come out of the gray if you contributed something meaningful to the discussion at hand. Majority of the ungrayed comments I see are usually irrelevant and uninteresting.

Because everyone is pending approval by default, it’s up to the the blog authors to manually click the button and get you out of the grey. I think the sheer number of commenters makes it rather burdensome for them to pick through every single comment and determine who doesn’t belong in the grey, but that’s Kinja for you.

I think the Jalopnik authors are better at this than most of the other blogs. Sploid and io9 seem to be almost fully grey, and it’s hard for good replies to surface.

But now that you’re out of the grey on Jalponik, keep a look out for good replies that are still pending approval. You can’t bring other commenters out of the grey, but you do have the power now to un-grey individual comments by replying to them or simply giving them a star.
